Using silk hankies and a method know as drafting, you can create with nothing more than your own enthusiastic hands, incredible silk yarn which you can use to create unbelievably beautiful silk lace scarves. Silk hankies are made up of hundreds of layers of silk cocoons which have been simmered in hot water, stretched over a wooden frame, dried and then dyed beautiful jewel tones. Drafting is the process whereby the hankies are stretched and thinned (by hand) to a thin yarn like fiber. The multi-coloured hankies in this way produce “one of a kind” variegated silk fibers perfect for scarves & shawls.

Moebius designs are circular knits which emerge symmetrically from the center out and have one simple twist.  The only difficult part of mobieus knitting is the cast on. Once you have mastered it, and are aware of a couple of ways in which mobieus  knitting effects your patterns, the rest in no more difficult than regular knitting.  Cat’s style of mobieus knitting is the perfect method for knitting the very popular infinity scarves and shoulder shawls.  You will be offered several possible styles of scarf or shawl to choose from, then we will cast on and get going.

Class

Reading Mosaic Charts (Beth) One 2  hour class - $20 plus supplies

Date & Time

Tuesday, July 13th     6:30pm – 8:30 pm
OR Saturday, July 31st    9:00am – 11:00am

Description

Mosaic Knitting resembles Fair Isle, giving the impression that two strands of differently coloured yarns have been used in the same row. In reality, you are only knitting with one colour/strand at a time. The patterns are created by slipping stitches of one colour over rows of stitches worked in another colour. The effect is similar to fair isle but without the difficulty of handling more than one colour in a row.  Simple two coloured mosaic is very attractive. If you instead use hand painted or self striping yarns, the effects are unbelievable. Mosaic knitting is very easy, once you understand how to read the style of mosaic chart created by the knitting genius, Barbara Walker.

Prerequisites

Intermediate, a good basic knowledge of knitting.

Class

Mosaic Dixon Monteagle Bag (Beth) 2  hour classes - $20 plus supplies

Date & Time

Saturday, July 17th      9:00pm -  11:00pm
OR Tuesday, August 3rd, 6;30pm – 8:30pm

Description

One easy way to support environmental concerns is avoiding plastic bags as much as possible by carrying & using your own bags. Dozens of patterns for string market bags are all over the internet but my favourite is the Monteagle Bag, a free pattern on the Mason Dixon Blog. Plug in the following address for the blog entry and link to the free pattern.  http://www.masondixonknitting.com/archives/2008_09.html#002491  This bag is a fun quick knit but includes 3 of the trickiest, most unusual stitches I have ever seen. The original Monteagle is a little smaller than I would like so I have developed a couple of variations that are larger. Let me help you figure out a size and conquer the three trippy little stitches (as the Mason-Dixon ladies call them) so you can do your bit for the Earth.

Prerequisites

Intermediate, a good basic knowledge of knitting.

Class

15,125 Knitters Can't be Wrong: Clapotis (Beth) One  2 hour classes - $20 plus supplies

Date & Time

Thursday, August 19th     9:00am – 11:00am
OR  Saturday, August 21st  9:00am – 11:00am

Description

On May 22nd, when I checked Ravelry, there were 15125 Clapotis projects posted. That is over 750 more than there were when I checked in March. Designed by Kate Gilbert, Clapotis was introduced to knitters in the Fall 2004 issue of Knitty. This shawl is so much fun to knit. At first glance, the instructions can appear a little intimidating. Trust me, with a little help getting started and a reliable method of keeping track where you are, it quickly becomes TV knitting. The pattern can easily be adjusted to any weight of yarn, any size of scarf or shawl; I have even knit a Clapotis Lap Blanket.  I will get you started, help you calculate how many repeats you need to achieve the size you want and then I have developed any easy tic off style chart I will give you to help keep track where you are. How to add beads will also be covered. Don’t be left out. You will enjoy the Clapotis experience.

Prerequisites

Intermediate.
